London Luton Airport was officially opened in 1938 as Luton Municipal Airport and was designed, even in those days, to be the hub airport for north London. During the war years the airfield continued to operate as a commercial airfield as well as being the base for 264 fighter squadron. The airport was also an important manufacturing base and the site at which the Percival Aircraft company built the Mosquito aircraft. Through the 1950s and 60s Luton became increasingly important as a hub for airlines offering package holidays, a precursor to the low cost airlines that now dominate. The airport continues to expand and develop and in July 2014 planning consent was granted for a £100m development to further enhance Luton’s position as an important part of London’s airport infrastructure.
There are three handling agents based at London Luton Airport, Harrods Aviation, Landmark Aviation and Signature Flight Support. All three companies offer a VIP service, ramp side vehicle access, customs and immigration clearance.
